Instrument-Assisted
Soft Tissue Mobilization

Precision instrument-assisted therapy that breaks through scar tissue, restores soft tissue mobility, and gets stubborn conditions moving again. Applied with clinical expertise — every session.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

Getting to What Hands Alone Can’t Reach

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) uses stainless steel tools to detect and treat soft tissue restrictions. It was developed to address one of the most common barriers to full recovery: scar tissue and fascial adhesions that limit mobility, alter movement mechanics, and perpetuate pain — even long after an initial injury has healed.

The tools allow your therapist to feel subtle changes in tissue texture and density — restrictions that may not be palpable with hands alone. Once identified, targeted strokes break down the dysfunctional tissue, stimulate a controlled healing response, and restore normal soft tissue mobility. It’s precise, evidence-informed, and particularly effective for chronic conditions, post-surgical rehabilitation, and tendinopathies that haven’t fully resolved with other interventions.

At Ethos, IASTM is applied by licensed physical therapists trained in its clinical use. It’s never a shortcut — it’s an advanced tool that works best when integrated into a complete treatment plan that addresses movement, strength, and the underlying mechanics driving your symptoms.

IASTM at Ethos is performed by a licensed physical therapist who combines instrument-assisted technique with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise. The goal isn’t just tissue mobility — it’s restoring the movement and function that tissue restriction has been limiting.

TECHNIQUES WE USE

  • Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
  • Scar tissue and adhesion breakdown
  • Fascial release and mobility restoration
  • Chronic tendinopathy treatment
  • Post-surgical soft tissue rehabilitation
  • Integration with therapeutic exercise and manual therapy

WHAT TO EXPECT

01 Full Evaluation — Your therapist assesses your movement, identifies areas of tissue restriction or tenderness, and determines whether IASTM is appropriate for your presentation. It’s recommended when there’s clear soft tissue dysfunction contributing to your symptoms — not as a default first step.

02 Instrument-Assisted Treatment — Using specialized stainless steel tools, your therapist systematically scans and treats the identified tissue. The tools amplify the therapist’s sense of the tissue, allowing for precise detection and targeted treatment of restrictions, adhesions, and areas of abnormal tissue density.

03 Integrated Follow-Through — This approach is most effective when immediately followed by movement and exercise. Your therapist incorporates stretching, strengthening, and functional movement work to reinforce the tissue mobility gains from the session and retrain healthy movement patterns.

04 Ongoing Reassessment — Tissue response guides the plan. Your therapist tracks objective improvements in mobility and function, adjusting the frequency and intensity of treatment as your condition evolves — and phasing it out as your tissue recovers and your movement improves.

The Ethos Approach

Why Choose Ethos for IASTM

Clinician-Led Precision

IASTM isn’t a machine — it’s a skill. The tools are only as effective as the clinician using them. At Ethos, it’s performed by licensed physical therapists with advanced training in instrument-assisted technique, clinical palpation, and the movement analysis required to address what’s actually causing your restriction.

Effective for Conditions That Have Stalled

Chronic tendinopathies, post-surgical scar tissue, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, and other stubborn soft tissue conditions often have a fibrotic or adhesion component that doesn’t respond to rest or exercise alone. IASTM addresses that tissue directly.

More Than the Instrument

The research on IASTM is clear: outcomes improve significantly when instrument-assisted work is combined with exercise. At Ethos, it’s always part of a comprehensive plan — not a standalone treatment. You leave each session having done meaningful movement work, not just received passive care.
